7,320 Pounds of Food Donations Raised During Zoolights!
January 05 2021
In late 2020, BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo partnered with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank for an innovative approach to bring more impact and excitement to their annual holiday lighting extravaganza, Zoolights. From November 23 – December 30, the Zoo offered a 50% discount to every guest presenting a non-perishable food item during Zoolights.
Over the course of the drive, 7,320 pounds of non-perishable food, which equates to 6,100 meals, was contributed. This placed the drive in the top 5% of The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank holiday drives. That’s a 92% increase over the amount of food donations brought in during the 2019 food drive during Zoolights.
Phil Frost, Zoo Director stated, “The Zoo is all about families and we are thankful to have been able to encourage our guests to give back, while also enjoying a holiday family outing at the Zoo. Our community has shown during this year of change and uncertainty, that one thing remains constant – our devotion to give back! This is a win-win partnership that we look forward to continuing in the years ahead.”
