Themes

Session 1 - Fur Feather Scales or Skin - Have you ever been told not to judge a book by its cover? Well some animals depend heavily on their "covers" for survival. The animal kingdom is extensive and diverse, and creatures must be built correctly to adapt to their environments.  Campers will analyze how various animals depend on their specialized covers and judge the importance of their own.

Session 2 - Diet Riot - Eat your broccoli or you won't get any dessert! Why is it so important that we eat our vegetables, and is it that way for all animal life? One thing is for certain, we all have to eat. In this session campers will discuss what different animals eat and why. Let us take your campers on an educational smorgasbord and answer the question WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Session 3 - Animal All-Stars - Can you run faster than a cheetah, jump farther than a kangaroo, or hold your breath longer than an otter? Are you smarter than an owl, or taller than a giraffe? Every day is an Olympic event for the most extreme animals in our Zoo. Campers will assess how they stack up when compared to some of nature's champions.

Session 4 - Wet & Wild - Whether you're a pool shark or a big fish in a little pond, we all live in a state like no other. Critters in Louisiana are well suited for swampy summers and wet winters. Come help us celebrate with a lagniappe of crafts, snacks, and activities that would make any gator smile.

Session 5 - Oh Grow Up! - Which came first, the chicken or the egg? All animal life starts similarly, but the ways that various organisms grow, develop, and live vary drastically. Campers will process what makes up the Circle of Life and how wild animals' life cycles may differ from their own.

Session 6 - Feed Your Face - Whether you eat like a bird or enjoy pigging out every now and then, everyone has a favorite food. But are you a predator or a grazer? Or maybe a parasite or a decomposer? Every animal has to get food in them one way or another in order to supply themselves with the energy necessary for life. Come get your fill and help yourselves to seconds as we check out the animal kingdom's finest eats.

Session 7 - Communication Breakdown - Can you hear me now? What if humans didn't have phones, computers, or even voices to rely on to communicate with each other? Animals use many tools to communicate such as visual displays, scent marking, and even tactile signals. Campers will learn to turn the volume down a notch and explore creative methods of communication.

Session 8 - Tales of Tails - Have you ever stopped to think about why we eat cereal endorsed by tigers and toucans, or why we cheer for a football team with a loveable elephant mascot? Animals are a huge source of inspiration for human stories, inventions, logos and more. Campers will spend some time considering the symbolic representation and cultural importance of various iconic animals in our everyday lives.

Session 9 - Wet & Wild - All life requires water for survival. For most of us, water is a thirst quencher, but for others water may be a safe home, a hunting ground, a recreational tool, or a danger zone. Leave your land animal attitudes at home and join us for a splashin' good time.

Session 10 - This Is How We Zoo It - Why Zoos? The three purposes of Zoos are conservation, education, and recreation. It takes a lot more than shovels and hoses to keep our Zoo up and running daily. In this week, campers will take a deeper look at all aspects of zoo keeping structure, conservation efforts, enrichment, and the general day-to-day life of our Zoo family. Why not Zoos?
