BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo Announces the Arrival of Red River Hogs

June 12, 2013

Brothers, Frodo and Yoda, are now on display at the Baton Rouge Zoo

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is excited to announce the arrival two new Red River Hogs from the Jackson Zoo in Jackson, Miss. Native to Africa and recently released from quarantine, the two 6-year-old brother hogs are now on exhibit.

This species of African pig gets its name from its reddish-brown hair and love of water. Unusual in appearance, they are most noted for their large, wedge-shaped heads and pointed ears with prominent tufts of hair. Living in groups of about six under a dominant male, red river hogs communicate through grunting noises. Their natural habitats of rainforest or damp savannah woodlands span from Senegal to the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
