When a burrfish is threatened it can take in large amounts of water and puff up its body which makes it look bigger, but also causes its spines to stand out. Even though it is a slow swimmer, few fish will try to eat it.
The burrfish has strong jaws and is able to crush the shells of the invertebrates that form the bulk of its diet.
