Alligator Gar

Gars can survive when the oxygen level in the water drops by floating on the surface and gulping air, absorbing the oxygen through its swim bladder.

Despite its fierce look, the alligator gar doesn’t attack people in the water.  Bites sometimes occur when the fish has been pulled into a boat and is fighting for its life.  Population studies are being conducted to decide if the alligator gar should be listed as a threatened or endangered species due to overfishing.
