American bison are smaller, shaggier in appearance, and have different shaped horns than the African Cape Buffalo or the Water Buffalo. True buffalo are wild cattle found in Africa and Asia.

In 1830 there were between 30 to 60 million bison in North America. By 1890 they had been hunted almost to extinction with fewer than 1,000 surviving.
